The chain link was a tattered and weak metal flag
hanging limp in the fog and forgotten.
We slipped through like ghosts and we hid in the throat
of the border between this world and that one.
We fall in. I catch a look in your eye I’m pulled out again,
I’m here calling a name
I don’t know how to say
but in the sound of the train
I heard every breath I was trying to take
and every noise that the world ever made
I heard all my friends laughing
I heard them falling apart
I heard the factories scream
and the beating of my heart
every voice lost in the steel monster’s roar
whispers in your ear through the maelstrom
(Nathan)
In madness you walk through the air above time
and the shape of it stretches it before you
beware, beware if you’re travelling there
hold fast to your friends who might moor you
or go into the blue if they’re sailing with you
and sing songs to be heard through the darkness
(noel’le)
The compass
points inwards
its needle sews your eyes awake
Take one more step in this rusty world
you’ll find yourself thin and invisible
each tired body is a place
made of mountains and laughter’s landscapes.
all are blindly moving towards
where we will cease to sing our solitary verse.
there is something
we all are struggling to say
it’s in the ripples of the stone you skipped across the bay
where is that stone now?
When I don’t know what to say
when I don’t know what to make
or the pitch perfect chords you want me to play
I will turn my ears to the trains.

In the curling smoke of fireworks
We watched the moon beyond the bay
It slipped out of a hole in the sky
It skipped across the night in your eyes
As hundreds more looked on in awe
We did not know what it was they saw
And I watched you arc and I watched you turn
I watched you flood and I watched you burn
Do we name this place do we call it ours
Where fireworks block out the stars
In smoke we saw monsters in water the moon
With all these people gathered here all searching for an idol
Think of all that we could do if we lost our bits and bridles
We could summon every memory that we all had forgotten
Celebrate it being now learn lessons and relearn them
We can sew the biggest circus tent and have ourselves a circus
Where we all act like animals and the elephants can ride us
Play city-wide capture the flag until we’re all exhausted
Build a human ladder to the moon GET THAT FUCKING FLAG BACK OFF IT
When you all sang those words
Did they catch in your throat
When you tried to breathe
Did you only breathe smoke
Do you love this place
Do you call it yours
What is yours

There’s a real big ladder in a real small boat in the ocean
If you trust the tide to bring you there let it bring you
And climb if you are hurting
And dive if you’re ready for the wind
Do you trust the tide to return you to the land
It will caress you small til you’re a smooth little dot of sand
Were you caught in between the softest place
And the murky drippy water of a cold dark cave
There is a southbound freight with your tag inside
Did you wonder if those pieces needed a place to hide
But your smile’s like the cracks in an old barn door
And your friendship’s a roof let the water pour
How do you name the ocean when you cannot name the blue
How do you recognize the tide when the moon’s rising inside of you
And back to back we measured our heights
And An oak tree grows inside of us and we’re climbing it tonight
None of us chose to be here, all of us chose to be right here.
I watch the lights moving slowly
And saw the rest of my life
A hollow machine
And turn back
